Oh yeah, the casting was literally the only good part of those movies.
And a good rendition of “Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold” in the first movie.
True, that man choir rocked that shit.
That’s fair. The sound track as a whole is pretty good.
Ian McKellen was great as Gandalf.
He did an extended interview recently and was still super charming
I love them for the same reason I love the old rotoscoped animated movies. I wish he hadn’t been forced to pad that shit out to three movies, but I’m glad there’s more Tolkien to see.
Honestly, a skilled editor could probably chop all three movies down to a single pretty good movie. The filler is really the main thing that ruins them for me.
I think I’ve heard that a fan already did that. Apparently it’s not bad
It’s good. That person also cut the extraneous content into a separate movie you can watch as a supplement.
If you feel the movie(s) had promise check the fan’s cut.
Doesn’t that cut all of White Council stuff?
IMO adding the White Council was a great choice for the movies. The problem was that they added dragged-out unnecessary action scenes all over the story. The long escape from Goblin Town, turning the barrel escape into an action scene, the ridiculous (and awful CGI) molten gold thing in Erebor itself.
A good cut should concentrate on bringing that stuff down. Not removing the White Council’s concomitant exploration of Dol Guldur and expulsion of Sauron.
the ridiculous (and awful CGI) molten gold thing
Molten gold does not look like that!
Molten gold looks like this: Basically, it looks just like any other molten metal – brightly glowing yellow/red.
If they had just made it look like actual melted metal, that would cure ~80% of the hatred I have for that scene.
I think it depends on what the intent is for the cut. In this case, it was to provide a version that is as close to the book as possible. I agree that what you describe could be a good cut too, but the goal isn’t the same.
I love the single movie book edits! They are so much better and more enjoyable without a lot of fluff
One cut I watched cut all the molten gold stuff. But you have to show smaug leaving the mountain and unfortunately he leaves dripping in gold so that looks kinda weird when you’ve cut all the stuff before that
Now that Bilbo was a real frood
A hoopy, you might say. He certainly knew where his towel was.
But not his pocket handkerchief.
The animated Hobbit movie got me to read the book.

I dunno. The casting of Orlando Bloom for the character not appearing in the book was odd.

Legolas does what Legolas wants.
including a woodland elf maiden that has a thing for dwarves. (Who might have been not in the novel either)

Martin Freeman is a solid casting choice as John Watson, though they eventually did him the disservice of turning him into an appendage of Sherlock Holmes.
Martin Freeman is perfect as Bilbo. His entire “I can’t stand this goddamn adventure, I’d much rather be at home with a cup of tea and a sandwich” attitude was absolutely spot on.
I actually never read any of the books and I picked up The Hobbit years after seeing the movie. There were a lot of things that I thought was added that’s actually in the book.
I watched all three … I think I liked the first? I’ve never watched any of them again though. Like many others, I’ve seen the original LOTR trilogy many times over.
I disagree. I think Martin Freeman was a mediocre choice. He’s a great actor but he doesn’t have the warmth that Ian Holm had in the original trilogy. Freeman is too sarcastic.
Bilbo doesn’t have that warmth in The Hobbit book. That’s something he acquired with age.
YOU BETTER WATCH YOUR MOUTH
This is Bilbo ~80 years before he was a doddering old man.
