Rich pedophiles really will close entire stores, losing 100% of profits from them, rather than let them unionize, losing potentially 5% of profits short-term.

100% of profits from 3 stores vs the risk of all their employees in the entire company having leverage for all future compensation negotiations.

Yeah, it’s about power and control, not money. Companies don’t want employees challenging their power structure. Employees are cogs to them, and cogs don’t get a say in what machine they are crushed in.

I can live with most of the other stuff, since the quality is good and they are hassle-free devices with Unix-like conventions, they last long, feel fantastic to use; Despite the price, despite the ring-kissing of Trump, despite being a mega corporate spreading its capitalistic cancer across the globe… all because the alternatives have been even worse.

Union busting is where I draw the line though, no matter if it’s in the sale or manufacturing or design side or whatever. This is the first one I hear about, I’ve not been aware of any earlier instances, mostly because I don’t follow stuff so tightly, I am almost certain it has happened before, but now that I have it in front of my eyes I can no longer abide it in my blissful ignorance.

This marks the day they lost me as a long-term customer. Perhaps ought to have happened earlier, but for me, it happened today.

I encourage others to consider the same.

Not really sure what I’ll do after these current devices die on me, but now it’s clear to me it can’t be apple. Google’s been dead to me a long time, same for Sony, Samsung, most other big players.

I guess we’ll see what the landscape is like in 5 years.

Fuck this. Fuck apple. Fuck me.

I mean I’ve never been an Apple customer. At least not since the OG iPods. But what company are you going to move to that wouldn’t do the exact same thing in that situation?

Apple is uniquely shitty in having endless contempt for their own customers, which is why I’ve always avoided them. But this just seems like kind of a weird “last straw”. But hey, anyone boycotting Apple has my support.

My industry has a lot of Apple laptop users for the reasons you mention. Every time I pull out my Zenbook Duo, I hear converts in the making. Sure, it’s a bit thick, but it runs Linux great and has two monitors in a portable platform with a good battery.

I recently got allocated an m5 macbook.

They last like 15 minutes before they’re chipped and scratched, the version of Bash they ship is a million years old, the UI is a fucking mess. Package management is a mess. The walled garden is a mess. I have had to brew this and fix my path for that just to have a working environment. This is ignoring the soldered on RAM bullshit. Can you even do memmap= to recover from bad soldered ram on a macbook or does it just become ewaste?

They sound nice and they feel nice until they’re scratched.

      Also the keyboards are heinous.

If Jobs was alive, he’d be punching people for re-inventing Vista Aero.

I thought the UI was supposed to be good.

      Fuck these devices.

And that’s where the T2 chip keeps its firmware so when the soldered-on storage goes bad, the whole computer can’t boot and must go directly in the ewaste…

I hate it so damn much.

yep! I mean soldered ssds are 100% replacable. it sucks and is expensive, but definitely doable with the right tools. but then they pair them with the t2 and underfill them trying to prevent exactly that

Apple’s UI has always been a joke. A case of looks pretty but is actually annoying and impractical to use. The greatest Apple joke is that you need to pay for a third party app to get basic window snapping. That is just one of many UI issues. It does look nice on screenshots though.

I know, since 2024. I’ve seen what they did, and their windows tiling and snap management is still egregiously inferior to almost every other desktop environment. So much so that people still pay for the app because it is so much better than default macOS, adding shortcuts, for example.

Mine is a bit old already, the first m1 air, and I haven’t a bad word to say. Although I mostly live in the terminal anyway, zellij, aerospace, alacritty, fresh as my ide, very elaborate sketchybar for ricing and all that. I’ve not yet faced many problems I couldn’t solve via terminal or a temporary boot into the whatever unsafe mode the newer os versions have brought.

The aluminium chassis has been incredible and I can still open the lid with a single finger without needing the other hand. No other laptop I’ve ever tried has been able to manage that, even if it sounds so simple.

But because I already live in a riced up i3-ish environment instead of the actual macos gui, switching to linux is mostly about migrating my personal dotfiles to equivalents I already have set up for a few of my systems at home and various remotes.

So the change won’t be big in impact. Only thing I foresee myself missing is the lid and build quality and battery life

Previous employer gave me an m1 pro and it just lived in a drawer until I quit.

I’m sure some salesrep got a nice nearly new linkedin machine after that.

The hardware is nice to touch but it is unethically designed by assholes who hold you, the device “owner” in complete contempt.

I had m1 for a week or so and sincerely tried to use it, everything felt just wrong and basic things didn’t work. All in all it was horrible experience, asked my old machine back. Working in a mac shop is tiring at least with windows laptops and desktops you can install linux on most of them easily and forget the pain.

Consider Fairphone. You pay a bit more for mid tier device, but hopefully (and so far seemingly) the money is being well spent.

following the starbucks method, ive seen a couple SB around me suddenly closed overnight, in a high traffic area(conference events every week), they likely smelled a potential union talks going on in some of the shops. the ones in target are not likely affected by it.

Sorry man. We don’t accept any of that talk here. Google and Microsoft are corporations and we don’t like those. It’s Linux all the way, no matter how horribly inconvenient that would be in practice.
