There is a theory that cats evolved the sound of their miaowing to trigger the same part of the human brain that reacts to a baby’s crying. Manipulative little fucks.

Technology@lemmy.world•Stack Overflow in freefall: 78 percent drop in number of questionsEnglish
41·9 days agoIt was a toxic garbage heap way before 2016. I remember creating an account to try building karma there back in about 2011 when doing that was seen as a good way to land senior job roles. Gave up very quickly.

Technology@lemmy.world•Stack Overflow in freefall: 78 percent drop in number of questionsEnglish
3·9 days agoThe whole point of StackExchange is that it contained everything that isn’t in the docs.
Can’t tell if you’re joking or just a dickhead tankie.
Not just the right. The entire Taiwan situation is entirely due to the Chinese being taught at school that Taiwan just is part of China like it’s an immutable fact.
Weird how many people seem to think it’s like a competition or something. It’s a descriptive label.
The whole Pluto thing taught us a lot about the psychology of letting go of something taught at a young age. People getting proper frothing at how they shoulda just let Pluto keep it, just to save themselves the extremely minor cognitive dissonance.

You can fuck right off with that whole “well actually NATO are the real imperialists trying to weaken Russia” bullshit.

Technology@lemmy.world•Elon Musk’s AI Grok Goes Rogue with Posts Suggesting Trump Is a Pedophile and Erika Kirk Is JD Vance in DragEnglish
19·14 days agoIt’s a fucking chatbot. We should be worried when it can’t be persuaded to say mad things.
I’m willing to bet that at least half of these “look at the mad things Grok said” pieces were planted by Elmo’s own media team.
At school, topics are divided into Arts, Science and Humanities. The majority of Bachelor’s degrees are titled Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science.
Using the word “Science” colloquially to describe anything that isn’t the Arts or Humanities is entirely consistent.

News@lemmy.world•Tesla loses title of world's biggest electric vehicle maker to Chinese rival BYDEnglish
4·14 days agoIt’s insane, the crazy high PE ratio was predicated on the idea that Tesla would be the only game in town for EVs or self-driving cars worldwide, but now both of those are obviously not happening I can only conclude there’s some sort of sunk cost fallacy at play.

News@lemmy.world•Billionaires added record $2.2tn in wealth in 2025English
2·16 days agoSingapore has low taxes and high public spending, due to the government owning significant shares in all the major companies there. Public services are funded from the dividends. There’s the added bonus that the government have people on the Board of Directors to prevent any anti-consumer or anti-competitive corporate shenanigans before they start, rather than having to challenge it in court later on.
The US or UK occasionally buy shares in companies to bail them out, but always flake out a few years later and sell them for a quick pre-election cash injection.
I think a lot of people who trumpet the “but they’re so talented!” line, don’t realize just how much genuine talent is actually out there washing dishes in between doing plays in 300-seaters.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Bay Area homeowners are hiring a sword-wielding man to help them kick squatters out of empty properties: ‘The average squatter has no melee experience’English
11·18 days agoThere seems to be the implication within that quote that because he’s brought a melee weapon, the party being attacked is bound by honor not to use a firearm.
In fact he’s probably putting himself in much more danger by bringing a sword (thereby providing a self-defense defense) than if he showed up unarmed.

Except it only plays out like that if you follow their entire plan for how you want to structure your files and do it exactly how they want. Yessir, I put my pictures in Pictures and my documents in Documents and my music in Music and my videos in Videos like a good boy and everything is taken care of, until the moment I have to do something very very slightly different to Microsoft’s plan for my life, like get a second SDD or install one of the many many many applications out there that prefer to put themselves in the top level directory and store their own data in there.
Unless your talking about OneDrive or some shit.
You mean the OneDrive that gets bundled with every Windows along with an account that you have to really fight the computer to not give you? Why wouldn’t I be including that?

I wish Windows 2000 still ran modern games.
“Lots of people” my ass.
Almost five decades on the planet and I don’t think I’ve ever heard a single person unironically claim the Soviets deserve “all the credit”, only that their contribution is vastly played down in the history curriculums of most Western schools.
