  • Sometimes I miss old forums where content was brought back up by simply posting within the topic (though that lead to the annoying and incessant “bump? bump? bump?” posts on threads people wouldn’t let die, i guess).

Post voting is understandable as an alternative but it just leads to so much vanity as a result. Sites like this and reddit have so many dorks that are like “my fake internet points… how could you”. If it matters that much to you just shitpost all the time and you’ll get those numbers up

  • While what you say is true to a degree the part you’re leaving out is that the kids who don’t have actor/musician/doctor/etc parents are still perfectly capable of learning these things.

They’re arguably better to bring into the various fields to challenge entrenched perspectives that get perpetuated by systems of momentum that you describe. In acting it’s what creates what led to metoo, in medicine it’s what creates wildly unfair work expectations and elitism, mainly because the old guard did it that way, and if you question the entrenched power “it’s because that’s the way we do things”. New blood is arguably more likely to push back against this because they aren’t as conditioned to play into the system from birth.

The other part that you leave out, as a result, is that these nepo kids then get an unfair advantage. Take kid A - a nepobaby like Kate winslets son, and kid B, just some kid who was obsessed with acting and writing. Let’s say your perspective is true and the nepobaby kid is obsessed with acting and writing in a wild environment of access to intense creative minds. But kid b is no slouch either, living and breathing acting and writing, constantly accessing whatever mentors they can, watching content online giving advice on process, and most importantly just constantly writing (or playing, acting, whatever) for years and years and years.

They’re both immensely talented individuals at this point. But what’s the difference? Kid A has connections capital to make films and eventually to production deals if they are any good. Kid B, at best, can scrape together a few grand to make a student film because they’re not affluent and their circle of peers is also broke. Even if they scrape together something noteworthy they have no connections whatsoever to industry.

In more extreme examples it’s a mediocre singer getting connected to hitmaker producers and media promotion while there are 10,000 excellent artists on Spotify with under 1,000 streams because they don’t have the capital to professionally record and promote their shit

    Etc

  • This happened in NJ and the billionaire who “left because of taxes” has both returned to the state since and pretty consistently stated he did not leave because of the tax hike and never said that was his motive. While I am sure these scumbags will do whatever is necessary to avoid paying taxes my point is don’t expect the media to not propagandize here.

The narrative being built is clearly one to make the average person think “increasing taxes on the wealthy will hurt us!” This is what happened in New Jersey. “If the tax increases are passed and David Tepper leaves it will cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars and ruin everything!”. It’s that domestic abuse shit; “you should just let me exploit the fuck out of you and if you don’t I’ll bail and it’s your fault for not letting me continue to do so”. Also fwiw while Tepper left NJ was fine and while his loss was notable to the tax budget it was not insurmountable by any means. NJ and California are already quite wealthy states.

  • No don’t you see, they ran their findings past a mother, as all archaeologists do (the implication of course being none of those dumb science idiots could handle being a mom as people can’t do 2 things). The mother then corrected them, likely with folded arms, likely going “mmmhmmm” once they realized that her wisdom beat their book learnin’

thus, she cemented her legashe. And that is why we all know her today: random nameless mother.

  • Replication as you describe isn’t done in most fields, that’s part of the “serious effort and funding” I mentioned. If I am applying for a grant to do research what do you think gets funded? Novel proposition or rudimentary replication? Funders want to be a part of glory just as much as institutions which is part of the systemic issue here.

There are researchers that aim to replicate but the numbers of them have shrunk across all fields because funders and universities are pushing for novel research.

Aside from this though one does not need to fully replicate a study to disprove it. In both the studies I pointed out people were sounding alarms for years about discrepancies in the data that in wakefields case should not have passed peer review. The lesne paper is more subtle and one could argue it still should’ve been caught in peer review. But in both cases it took ages of people saying “hey hey hey this shit is fucked” and that is the problem. In the case of Wakefield it was more decisive, in the case of lesne it was more insidious (kind of a sunk cost fallacy because the field bought into the hypothesis without verifying so hard)

  • Modern replacement as a kodi box for both shield and pi is ugoos am6b+. ~120$ on aliexpress (probably more with tariffs) and once you flash it with coreelec it can natively playback pretty much any format except av1. You still dual boot to android so can also run all the streaming apps too, if you want, and the android is really stripped back vs the shield (especially the later releases where ad bullshit creeped in quite a bit) though not fully degoogled because the play store is still present.

Main downside is some issues with hdmi-cec. It works 99% but power on doesn’t when in coreelec. Ugoos locked the bootloader for some reason and refuses to unlock it. Fixes for this depend on equipment and use scenario. Some people on the forum that watch tv a lot just disable power on/off cec and leave it running 24/7, it’s pretty low power. I have an avr that works with hdmi-cec and home assistant so I have hdmi-cec on/off turned on, it will turn off when I turn the tv off with remote, and when I turn the tv on the avr turns on via CEC then home assistant sends a wake-on-lan packet to the device, which turns it on. A bit of a delay, but works.

Only device on the market that can properly play back Dolby vision though, including commercial bluray players. If you download 2160p remux with the dv layer for lg oled this is literally the only thing that plays it back correctly. Alternatively just get hdr rips

  • If you root your lg oled you can truly block automatic updates. You can also install ad free youtube with sponsorblock integrated plus a bunch of other stuff that is of varying utility depending on your use case.

In general though just don’t connect it to the internet and get a $100 box for jellyfin from china (ugoos am6b+ works great and can playback basically anything but av1 natively if you flash Coreelec, the android side can still run streaming apps if you insist or iptv apps like tv mate since iptv support in kodi/jellyfin suuuucks).

Lg has proven they don’t respect consent by silently opting you in to data collection with updates. The updates never add features or bug fixes, just ugly UI changes and shit like this. It’s almost never worth updating unless someone is specifically saying “you should update, it fixes/adds ____

In the future don’t support them but at the same time it’s the “who the fuck can you support/oh you use an iphone under capitalism” problem. Yeah you don’t need a big tv, you don’t need an oled, you can buy a far more expensive commercial display, etc. I dunno

  • It takes AGES for malfeasance to get consequences. The Wakefield MMR study (responsible for energizing the modern anti vaccination movement), published in 1998, wasn’t retracted until 2010. (He was also stripped of his license to practice medicine and has consistently doubled down since which has paid off dearly, marrying supermodels and being a literal millionaire).

The amyloid plaque hypothesis for Alzheimer’s that was based on falsified data from 2006 wasn’t retracted until 2024. This had thousands of citations, possibly tens of thousands, and the first author continues to defend the data manipulation as overblown. Essentially something like that the underlying experiments were sound, we just edited the images for clarity, there was no intent, all (8!) of my coauthors agreed to the retraction because they’re laaaaame, basically every drug made based on this hypothesis doesn’t work because of some other reason, trust me bro.

It’s very difficult to counter this. It takes serious effort to generate data contrary to the evidence presented. However, funding would help. But additionally this is something where criminal charges would be merited. Wakefield has created a world in which we moved backward for his own financial enrichment. One could argue that the children dead from measles outbreaks are in part his fault. He lost his license, sure, but this is meaningless. He is an antivax icon, he married Elle McPherson, he does podcasts and documentaries, speaking engagements, etc. he is paid far more than many doctors with none of the stress and liability. And it’s fairly clear his original intent was to discourage people from the MMR vaccine to push them towards a product he had a vested financial interest in. The antivax stuff was not his goal but it worked out because he is a sociopathic grifter.

Lesne is different. He is a scientist that is probably pushed to publish at all costs and did so. Perhaps he is honest and his manipulation was simply to improve clarity. If it was not and he was pushing to get an influential paper out then he is guilty of wasting billions in funding and tens of thousands of hours of researcher time as well as countless lives wasted doing clinical trials for treatments that were never worth exploring.

What’s a viable consequence for these people? Life in prison? This is such a huge crime against society. Similarly the Monsanto and Coca Cola ghost writing research, everything involved in tobacco, Purdue and OxyContin addiction, etc. the last one was treated as a civil matter but are these not criminal? Countless lives were destroyed

  • This is the inevitable next step. YouTube is looking at doing this too, where ads would be served as part of the same stream id as the content (eg your page wouldn’t refresh and the ad would be cut into the video itself) but they have to make the player work with changing states without refreshing the page across all platforms and it puts a lot more stress on CDNs (plus sponsor block would still be a method to defeat, although not as effective).

But integration of the ads more deeply into the content has always been the goal. That’s why product placement exists. The fault of commercials is that people can simply disengage - go to the bathroom, talk to friends, fuck around on phone, etc. but if the ad is part of the content they have to see it if they want to engage with it. You lose the ability to shill as effectively (unless you do the youtuber paid segment thing, which makes your ads programmatically skippable again eg sponsorblock) but you gain an ad that is practically unblockable unless the show is essentially censored.

Advertisers are scum. Destroy all advertisers. Admen are the cancer that destroy society. Every cool thing has advertisers encroach in on it once people realize how cool it is and then they destroy it - radio, tv, newspapers, books, the internet, literally any public space, etc. if you work in advertising you should be ashamed of yourself and your parents definitely feel like they went wrong somewhere

  • Also means that a robust community of people creating businesses to sell variations of the hardware for those who aren’t as maker friendly cannot emerge, correct?

Bc imo that’s what really got early 3d printing off the ground. Like back in 2010 during the reprap days there were all the independent maker storefronts plus a few bigger ones like lulzbot and makerbot (that eventually all got put out of business or bought for toxic modern shit like bambulab because in the modern day under capitalism every single industry has to consolidate until it’s under a few large extremely consumer hostile companies with okay products that just eventually get worse and worse bc there’s no competition or regulation for them but I digress).

Without this industry or a proper open source platform I don’t see how this will succeed
