Senior Chief Petty Officer. Starfleet is in my blood, and I’ve spent my entire adult life in service to boldly going.

Keiko and Molly are my favorite humans, but Transporter Room 3 will always be my favorite.

Just don’t ask who what’s in the pattern buffer.

  • He started his reign by banishing the person responsible for saving Faramir and thus securing his own ascendancy to the throne.

    Source?

Beregond, of the citadel guard, prevented Faramir from being killed by Denethor by keeping other guards from entering and fulfilling Denethor’s crazed wish of death with the only mostly-dead Faramir.

From the LOTR Fandom page: “After the War of the Ring, Beregond was brought before the newly crowned King Elessar to answer for the abandonment of his post, as well as the murders of those who stood in his way as he raced to rescue Faramir. Recognizing that what he did was out of love for his lord, he did not impose the death penalty upon him; the newly-crowned king’s largesse allowed for Beregond to simply be banished from Minas Tirith”

  • I don’t deny aragorn has style. While he gracefully dances over it, the bar is pretty low here. Denethor was a lesser sire of greater men.

The man sent some of the city’s only defenders into a battle he knew was unwinnable because he was throwing a temper tantrum.

Whether either of them is fit for leadership or has the rizz to do so, I say Down with all monarchies, embrace anarcho-syndicalist communes.

  • On the one hand, they shouldn’t be beholden to some “royal” douche somewhere simply because he’s the king. “divine right” my ass.

On the other hand, don’t make a promise 8d if you can’t or won’t keep it.

On the third mutated hand, how much of them swearing an oath was due to societal brainwashing making them feel like they had to?

Aragorn can be a “good king” all he wants but as far as I’m concerned he’s still just as bad as any other. He started his reign by banishing the person responsible for saving Faramir and thus securing his own ascendancy to the throne. Without a steward to hand over the proverbial keys, all we have is a sword some elves who raised this guy says is made of bits of some important historical sword, and an old dude with a walking stick who used to wear Grey but now decided white is more his style.

I mean, if I went around saying I was an emperor just because some crotchety hermit had lobbed a scimitar at me, they’d put me away!

  • if impertinent and irrelevant inquiries of this sort are to become the rule in matters of literature, then the time is not far distant when a German name will no longer be a source of pride.

Tolkien has such a way with words.

I mean, the man made an entire fake world with thousands and thousands of years of history and deep lore so he could use a language he made up, so that tracks.

  • Anybody have any experience using mesh radios for communication while hiking?

The closest node for either one is 60 miles away, so I’m not really tied to either, but am interested in picking some up for communication out in the field while out of cell range.

I have some tech/electronics experience, and plan on making some solar powered relay nodes eventually so I can slap them on a tree or tall pole, but for now I have nothing.

Recent politically motivated events in my country, as well as weather, have made my decision to have a secondary form of communicating with my wife pretty easy, and I’d like it to be something relatively small I can pack into a bag or pocket, that’s easy for my non-techy partner to use.

  • Oh there was definitely “a little Gandalf” in at least one of the tooks.

I like to think gandalf was the Old Took’s actual father. He lived the longest of anyone who didn’t have magical intervention.

All the Tooks tend to live longer

They’re more curious and outgoing than other hobbits

Hobbits in general are resistant to outside influence, but the Tooks seem better equipped to handle corruption. After all that time in close proximity to the ring, frodo only cracked after having it in his storage trunk for almost 20 years, and in direct contact with it for over a year. And he only broke inside fucking mount doom itself.

Even after all that the “fool of a took” does, Gandalf is still clearly quite protective and supportive of Pippin.

In the book, when Gandalf sees the uruk-hai half-breeds that saruman is making, sauruman tells him he should be able to “recognize it, halfling-friend” which to me says Sauruman knows Gandalf has made his own “half-breeds”

In the Hobbit, Tolkien says it was rumored among other families that a Took long ago took a faerie wife and that’s why the Tooks are “like that”

100%, some hobbits got wizard fever and climbed Gandalf like a tree filled with second breakfast.

  • Random thought just popped into my head for no reason I can think of: if you know someone’s name, and the county they own property in, you can visit their county records (many even have publicly accessible websites) and find the exact plots of land tied to their name!

I managed to track down the former property owner of the place I live now to their new house in another state, since they intentionally hid a bunch of issues from the buyer before the sale that ended up costing nearly half the price of the house and the realtors decided to ignore me when I attempted to get in contact.

All I did was look up “[County I knew remembered they were moving to from overheard conversations during the buying process] county property records” and the rest was super straightforward.
