My understanding is that orphan crushing machine is for highlighting systemic issues. This just sounds like the guy didn’t have family to take care of the dog and had to give it up because he was sick for a long time.
People not having that level of support in their lives could be considered a systemic issue imo. There’s also how a wealthy person could have paid for their dog to be looked after for an extended period instead of giving it up.

obviously the back story is that the guy is in the hospital because he was beaten to a life altering degree during a consensual encounter with police after legally walking away because he was not being detained
It was surprisingly dumb for this man to be forced to do this. I’m glad this nurse decided to circumvent that by adopting this doggo, though.
