GrapheneOS reigns surpreme. We should all use it. But I am not buying a phone for €2000. Count me out.

Looks like I better hope the year of the Linux phone arrives before I need to replace my current phone, unless this is followed up by announcing some more budget friendly lines that also meet GrapheneOS’ minimum requirements.

Any chance we get a Lite or an “a” series of this phone? Or a more affordable Motorola that meets GrapheneOS’ strict hardware requirements?

Based on my understanding, yes. There will be more affordable models later, they’re supposed to have a full line-up.

But for now, the affordable GOS phone is still a Pixel.

Not many years from now the every man just won’t be able to afford a decent phone.

Can’t say I would be opposed to going back to land lines. You wanna call me? Wait till I’m home.

Sure they will, just sign on this dotted line and you’ll pay monthly. Give us your previous $1.5k phone and we will give you credits on your bill every month, but that credit will disappear if you change anything about your plan or want a new phone.

      Oh wait.

Actually, with resources getting scarce, we should already get comfortable with the idea that a phone should be expensive, and be repairable enough to last for many years!

      • Oneplus One: mine lasted 11years, I had passed it down to my kid. I changed the charging connector once.
      • Oneplus 5T: lasted 6 years
      • Now Pixel 8a: currently one year, but I already had to get the battery replaced after 6 months :/

I know the Signature is supposed to be their ‘ultra flagship’, but 2 grand?

The worst thing is that I’d even be half interested it it wasn’t this expensive…

I dont exactly have a problem spending $2000 on something, but $2000 for a phone is just stupid.

I guess you could say that about a lot of things; cars, etc.

But just on principle. That phone is not costing 4x more to make, and is not giving me 4x the value as a $500 phone. Or, fuck, give me 10x the value of the $200 phone I have right now that does absolutely everything I want (I guess a better camera would be nice).

I would maybe consider spending $2000 on a phone if it was functionally as usable as a laptop. Which Android is not.

All this stuff about the memory crisis; I don’t think phones suddenly cost 4x more to make and if they do, how about don’t put fucking 16GB of RAM in phones?

The only use I can see for them is gaming and there are better devices for that, for less money.

Running your own LLM models is another one I guess, but I don’t think there’s many people doing that.

But if you had the choice between playing on a phone and playing on a Steam Deck/ROG Ally/MSI thing would you still stick to your phone?

What’s the best way to get a new, unlocked pixel (any supported version) for < $500 without needing to have a new contract with a carrier?

Just keep an eye on slickdeals? Wait till a new version comes out and look for sales on the old version?

I had to buy a Pixel 10 recently for hedging the fact the Motorola may be too expensive and not live up to the hype. So far I’m glad I’ve gotten it, but here to hoping they sell enough to keep making them and I can pick one up on the used market.
