Donald Trump on Saturday said that he did not see Venezuela’s opposition leader Maria Corina Machado as a potential replacement for Nicolas Maduro after he was removed from power overnight.

“I think it would be very tough for her to be the leader. She doesn’t have the support within - or the respect within - the country,” Trump said, adding that he thought she was a “very nice woman” when addressing the potential for her to take power.

The same poll showed that about 50 percent viewed Ms. Machado positively as a politician, down from about 60 percent in July 2024.

You are still arguing based on this thing called reason that is completely incomprehensible to Trump and his cronies.

TBF the Military and Security Apparatus is still intact so Trump is probably not entirely wrong about the support being nonexistent.

She might have the love of the people, but it’s not the people with the guns.

Hand power to the woman who won the Nobel Peace Prize that he coveted? Want famtasy-land of rational thought is this reporter living in?

I guess I should watch closely and compare notes from all the other failed attempts to “bring democracy” (read: install puppets) to some oil-rich country, but I just can’t. Nothing good can come out of Trump’s regime.

I’m calling Trump’s bs. That’s why she won the peace prize. He’s trying to make it less obvious, but he’ll “mull it over” over the coming weeks and in the end she’ll magically be the most qualified.

This actually might be a better outcome than if she did get put in power, though I suppose there’s an argument that Trump her such an obvious puppet might undermine her support.

It’s really hard to say whether Maduro or the Venezuelan rightwingers will be worse for their country. Probably the latter, since they’re now Trump puppets, so there will be nothing but looting and death squads.
