I didnt download Jellyfin or steamlink through an app store. I loaded the .apk onto a USB, plugged it in, and sideloaded it lol.

You can technically use Nix on another distro, does that count?

I’ve said it before, but NixOS technically isn’t bad for beginners (assuming they’ll never operate another Linux distro - but let’s be honest, after you learn Nix, why would you?).

Unlike other distros, you can’t break Nix. You never need to reinstall. Sure, the advice you find online pertaining to FHS will confuse you, and you’ll wonder why the fuck anyone would ever need to set up a “snapshot”, but it won’t matter.

You’ll spend your days showing your friends and family your girthy flake, you’ll tell them how you use home manager to create a shell script INSIDE your home.nix module so it’s declarative - they wont understand, but happy that at least you’re over your catboy phase.

In some ways I think NixOS is good for beginners. I started with Ubuntu, then Arch, then NixOS.

I managed to break Ubuntu and Arch in some really weird ways which made reinstalling my root directory easier than diagnosing the issues.

You cannot break NixOS unless you do some funky chroot shit or rebuild with temporary partitions.

This isn’t to suggest newbies should choose NixOS as a first distro, learning NixOS will give you a skill set which will not translate to knowledge about how other Linux OS’s work (because it breaks file system conventions).

However… If you know how to use NixOS, you’re living a post distro-hopping life, having ascended to godhood, and letting the Arch users know you use Nix BTW.
