The enforcement of the executive comes almost exclusively from people in the executive refusing to follow their orders. If the Supreme Court says “the War Powers Act applies, duh” it still won’t mean anything unless the military refuses to do the wars. Congress saying it or the SC ruling it is just an effort to get them to do that.
It does kind of seem like despite the concerns for poor training of the new recruits, it’s longtime agents who have been itching to openly hunt immigrants that have been involved in the most egregious acts. Minimum sentences are there for a lower bound for the least bad version of a crime. “Aggravated kidnapping” would also be using a weapon to force a guy to drive you to where your stolen car is and give it back. The thirst for higher and higher minimum sentences because otherwise a judge is going to let a bad guy be set free after “only” a half decade is childish and has caused immense harm to our society.

Huh? He discarded all materials and seems to have been super careful about not leaving evidence, but they found materials in his home and car four years later? Was he stocking up for another bombing? Or was buying plumbing supplies and batteries not an uncommon thing for him?
Even if the contradiction comes from the prosecutors, an editor should be pointing it out so the author acknowledges they just wrote two things that don’t make sense together and tried to ask for clarification.
I’m not sure the anti-chaos economic elite theory holds anymore. This has been the most chaotic year in recent history, spurred by far right racism, with pretty direct impacts on the shut up and shop economy of the United States, and the elite pushback has been tepid to non-existent. A few of them have been lighting money and their customer base on fire to support it.
It might be time to start entertaining the idea that the robber barons aren’t just bad people because they want to maximize profits through hyper-capitalism. At some point money alone isn’t the core pursuit and they’re more desirous of unfettered power. A weaker economy, but one where the government is powerless to regulate their activities and a normalized culture of corruption may yield less profit, but it gives them freedom and control to be untouchable lords.
The United States does all of those things except have sacred cows.
They can call it a ballet, it doesn’t make it one, and the human soldiers who will be on the hook for following illegal orders won’t be protected because of it.
