There is not statute of limitations for murder in Minnesota, and state-level crimes cannot be pardoned by the president. They may not be able to prosecute him in the current political environment, but there is no end date when he can be tried for this murder.

The EU is not capable of defending Greenland from an American invasion. They lack the kind of expeditionary military needed to do it. The best they could do is send large quantities of weapons that could be used by insurgents against the invaders.

But really, there’s not much even that could do. Greenland has a population of 56,000, even if the EU was willing to arm an insurgency. The US has a population of 330,000,000. Insurgencies can pull off some real underdog miracles, but there’s a limit. Ukraine, despite being outnumbered, can resist Russia through wits and bravery. But this would be like Vatican City trying to resist the Russian military.

Hell, we imagine Greenland as this vast territory, one that would be as difficult to subjugate as Afghanistan. But look at how Greenland is actually populated. Greenland isn’t really a country in the traditional sense. It’s basically five small towns.. Seriously, five towns, with populations of 24,000, 11,000, 9,000, 6,000, and 6,000. Occupy those five towns and you now control 99% of Greenland’s population. The countryside is virtually empty except for some scattered mining camps. This isn’t a territory that can support a large rural insurgency like Vietnam or Afghanistan.

There’s wealthy and then there’s wealthy. How many billionaires are on the sex offender registry? You don’t really reach “above the law” levels of wealth until you start reaching that level.

Translation: we found some mentally ill kid, groomed him into participating an imaginary terrorist attack, and charged him once we had done enough for us to nail him.

I don’t think it’s possible to make an LLM image generator that can’t generate child pornography. (Maybe you can chain it so it will refuse requests to do so, but the models will always retain the capability at their core.)

As long as the AI is trained on data that contains:

1. Children.
2. Adults.
3. Adult pornography.

The model will have the capability to produce child pornography. As long as it knows what pornography is, what an adult is, and what a child is, it will be able to map the features of adult pornography onto images of children. Trying to train an AI without all three of these things would be nearly impossible and would severely hamper the AIs abilities to do perfectly useful and legal things. You could just not include any images of children in the training data, but then the LLM couldn’t create AI-edited images of family photos or generate perfectly harmless SFW images involving kids. And you can’t really exclude porn from the data, as it’s all over the net, and LLM providers would actually prefer if their models can generate explicit imagery. They’ve openly stated their intention to use these tools to generate revenue from adult content.

That doesn’t matter at all. Simulated child porn has been illegal in the US for over 20 years.

Maybe when you already have so much money that you can effectively do whatever you want, and you know that people like you don’t ever face justice? I think about this sometimes. What happens if people of the far future decide they don’t want to go back to the old climate. What if they prefer things the way they are?

Imagine we have a really catastrophic warming scenario. A few centuries from now, the human population of a few hundred million mostly huddles around the upper latitudes, land that was uninhabitable tundra in our time. Imagine if natural systems start slowly lowering the greenhouse gas level back down, or if someone wants to scrub the excess carbon from the atmosphere. How would those people react?

Will they want to restore the Earth to how it was? Sure, that would probably be better for humans and nature overall, but what about their society specifically? Are they going to want to relocate their entire population back to the lower latitudes? And consider, the process that drove humans to those high latitudes was likely a historical event on the order of the Black Death, an epochal catastrophe whose emotional damage was so great that we still feel its echos today.

And the people then are being asked to willingly sign up for a second round of forced migration? And then you have the problem of, who exactly gets to own all this newly habitable land opening up in the lower latitudes? Who gets to own the land that was once inhabited, but had been abandoned for centuries? Who gets to own what was once China, India, of the Continental United States? How do you compensate people whose homes are going to be rendered back into polar wasteland?

I can see such a society simply choosing to keep things as they are. It may simply be too practically difficult to restore the old world. Even if the net condition of humanity and nature would improve, this is the exact kind of global coordination problem that global warming was in the first place!

They might start pointlessly burning carbon just to keep the temperature up, burning just enough to cancel out what the planet naturally recycles. They might install solar mirrors, except designed warm the planet rather than cooling it.

Or maybe the powers that be simply let the changes happen anyway, and they don’t even try to make the transition equitable. The new lands get handed to the rich and connected. Everyone else gets told to pound sand.

It’s interesting considering a far future that has almost the exact opposite problem as we do, and yet they would be under very similar pressures and struggles as we are.

Seriously. When I was a kid, people said that tv would rot your brain. But at least TV required you to actively engage with it. Even kids shows have a plot, a coherent story with a beginning, middle, and end. You have to actively watch, consider what’s happening, and engage with it. You have to use your mind, even if just binging soap operas. Putting your kid in front of a stream of shorts is like having them watch a large array of randomly blinking lights. There’s no content. No thought. No processing. No development of any kind can come from that.

If I were you, I would find who owns that gas station. Then hand write an actual physical letter and mail it to them, explaining why you only get gas at their station. That could make enough impression that when that station’s owner is tempted to put in ads, they’ll remember you.
