481·9 days agoThe problem runs a lot deeper than who’s running, but if the DNC was the kind of party that would let someone like Walz run for president then yeah Trump wouldn’t be president.

111·11 days agoI feel I’m getting repetitive with this, but this has always been the case. This latest escapade is basically Iraq but with a veneer of Libya.

News@lemmy.world•After Venezuela Attack, Trump Says Something Must Be Done About Mexico
262·11 days agoWhy do you expect the military leaders of the most utterly reprehensible empire of our times, which has killed millions, displaced tens of millions and condemned hundreds of millions to poverty within living memory, to have a conscience? These people are gangsers for capitalism, and capitalism has spoken; the law is secondary.

News@lemmy.world•Mayor Zohran Mamdani doubles down in an unapologetically progressive inauguration
21·12 days agoHere’s the thing though: By that definition what you label as progressive liberals (socially liberal fiscally conservative people) basically don’t exist as a political force, partially because this philosophy wouldn’t be able to address the issues it claims to champion in any meaningful sense. The gender gap for example is as much an economic problem as it is a social one, and you can’t even think about systemic racism without also getting into poverty and the impact of slavery. You have classical/neoliberals and to the left of them social democrats/progressives; there’s no real niche for combining the social policies of one and the economic policies of the other.
As for social democrats, they’re better categorized as left wing of liberalism rather than their own thing. Sure they want the capitalist status quo to be nicer, but they’ll close ranks with their neoliberal cousins to defend it no matter how much they dislike it.

News@lemmy.world•Mayor Zohran Mamdani doubles down in an unapologetically progressive inauguration
32·12 days agoI mean to be fair self-proclaimed democratic socialists do tend to just be left-leaning liberals (also known as social democrats) with a coat of paint. Mamdani is saying and doing good things, but nothing I’ve heard from him makes me believe he wants to seize the means of production.

News@lemmy.world•Bernie Sanders criticizes AI as ‘the most consequential technology in humanity’
1·17 days agoKid named steam engine:
It’s not clear. There are two IS groups in Nigeria, Boko Haram and IS-West Africa Province. The former are the murderous rapist scum, the latter still scummy but the more respectable of the two. Either way it doesn’t matter because imperialism is bad, but the memo doesn’t specify which one he’s talking about.
The only unique thing about Trump is that he’s bringing the evil America likes to export abroad to its own soil, but that’s not the point I’m making here. In criticizing Trump Americans (including you in your parent comment) tend to defend the pre-Trump status quo and past administrations. Sure Trump is uniquely autocratic, but that doesn’t mean evil ghouls like Obama and Clinton deserve anything other than condemnation.
Where do I find those “presidential rankings” and does killing half a million children affect one’s spot in them?
Looking at the other comments, you seem to have too much faith in humanity.

I mean in principle sure, but this has been happening for almost a year now and barely any escalation has happened. At this point protests are acting as release valves more than anything else.
