Nah, a landlord cannot legally deny access to an apartment/house you paid for, like you can literally call the cops (make sure you have a copy of the lease safely stored on your phone or something) and get let back in. They need a court case to evict you.
But microsoft can deny access your OS, and with the manatory full disk encryption implemented, you can’t even get back in to retrieve your data. (kinda like WannaCrypt) And this would be all legal since ToS and mandatory arbittation bs. No court case needed to hold your files hostage.
So I’d say Microsoft is like 10x worse than a landlord

Same thing?
You can add custom keys to secure boot.

Mandatory Arbitration in ToS have entered the chat
You have like 30 days, from the date of sale, to opt out in most of these clauses, if you didnt mail a fucking letter to them to opt out, then you’re fucked.

What if you downloaded an iso from Microsoft and typed a simple command into powershell to activate it? 🏴☠️
I mean you’re gonna have to prove in court how you’ve been “harmed” and if you don’t have a sales receipt from microsoft, then I don’t see how a court is gonna side with you.
Pretty sure some lawyer that works for Microsoft is gonna try to counterclaim and say you committed copyright infringement by bypassing the normal activation method.
And can you even afford lawyers lol? Most of us cannot afford constantly paying for laywers that cost $200/hour on the cheaper end, and suing a massive corporation is an uphill battle.

KGB is inside the oval office 💀
(I mean they literally deported a Russian dissident back to russia… need say more?)

Most people have windows because of OEM keys, so you don’t really have a direct bussiness relationship with Microsoft so its kinda harder to sue.
If you build a pc then separately bought a key, then you might have a better case.
(Disclaimer: I am not a laywer)

Dualboot, don’t store sensitive files in windows?
(Although I’m having a bit of trouble trying to do dualboot myself so… idk lol)

Oh you can sue if you have Epic Games level of money and access to lawyers. Otherwise corporate says “fuck you”.

No they’re not really technically “selling” it. Its bundled with Windows.
Its the home edition thing where they require a microsoft account. Afaik, for the Pro version of Windows, Bitlocker doesn’t require a microsoft account.

RIP Anime?
Is the future just gonna be filled with AI Slop?

“help” people that lose their key
Funny enough, people have lost access to their bitlocker encrypted drive because of some weird issues that triggered the windows intallation to revert to asking for the full bitlocker encryption key (I think if you disable secure boot or mess with CPU upgrades or the TPM, or some weird update broke, that can happen), which they didn’t have and forgot the microsoft account. But microsoft can’t help because they forgot about their acount credentials.
They should’ve asked the FBI for help lolz

Nope, this isn’t even a “backdoor”. The key itself was automatically uploaded to your microsoft account, so they can just take the key from the microsoft servers and walk right in. This isn’t some secret, a quick online search will reveal this as public information. They literally tell you the key will get uploaded.

Apparantly that suspect had a 4 digit pin so once they bypassed the Secure Enclave, they can brute force it in 10 seconds
For Phones, 20 character alphanumeric password is a hassle, but for computers, you can easily use a 10 word passphrase.
If you use a long password, bypassing the password entry limit doesn’t matter if the algorithm itself is secure.
In this case, the key was uploaded to a microsoft account… so you don’t even need a back door, just walk right in…

Home edition has this “please sign in to microsoft account to ‘finish encryption’” text with a exclamation mark which implies the key is available on the drive unencrypted if you don’t sign in, meaning anyone could just access your drive with physical access.
There is no “turning off” the key upload, once you sign in, the upload happens immediately, you can “delete” it later, but like nobody really knows if they ever delete it once they have it.

Encryption doesn’t actually complete until you log in with a Microsoft account for Home Edition.
Anyways: Use Veracrypt.
Or just Linux + LUKS

No, there are reports of fairphones (which aren’t even linux) not being allowed on ATT already.
Some managed to call customer support to get their their specific phone’s imei whitelisted, but like… if the person you get doesn’t know what you’re talking about, you’d have to keep calling until you find someone competent, so good luck on the “Customer Support hell” with long queue and stuff. And the system could change any time, the manual whitelisting feature could get turned off tomorrow. If there are any issues with service, they’te just gonna blame your phone for not being on their approved list of phone models.
Except their keys were saved but microsoft deemed that they cant “prove ownership” of the microsoft account, because they lack the credentials…
