I think this is true of open source and open science more generally.
In the long run there’s no way that the actual desires of humanity can be out-developed by an extremely privileged group of front-runners, rent-seekers, enshittifiers, etc. (eg. proprietary software)…
The main enshitification I’ve seen has been when a project tries to financially support itself via a supported version or enterprise version. More often than not new features get developed for the paid version and the open source version becomes the community version. New features then never got put in to the community version, or it remains in a crippled state
