As of a few minutes ago old.reddit.com now seems to requre logging in to access it.
Shame as it was still the best place to browse for info about some niche interests.
Edit: Seems like they might be testing the change as it is hit or miss at the moment.

While I’ve been on Lemmy for a while, I haven’t really seen any hobby - centric or geek centric areas.
I’ll miss the movie threads in particular, but there were a ton of active crafts, art & ttrpg threads to get inspiration from. Any suggestions?

There are certainly more! Tell me your particular interests, and it’s very likely they have communities too. Anything from anime to documentaries, from woodworking and knitting to cast iron, and from D&D to Pathfinder!
I run a few small communities on the fediverse, and its tough trying to start one up. Granted I try to keep mine canadian focused, but its an uphill battle either way. I was never one to volunteer or be an admin of a community, but I wanted to get the ball rolling somehow. Very disheartening to realize I’m the only one posting in the community, esp because I’m just a lurker at heart.

You shouldn’t, you’re teaching them bad behaviors. If you go to Canada and you’re friendly to the Canadians they’ll expect the same from other visitors and will get upset when they’re mistreated and that will curdle their maple syrup and if that happens then they can’t feed their cubs. It’s better to just stay away from Canada.

Thank you! People keep saying “just search”, but honestly I’ve done various iterations of that (including subscribing the most popular lists) and its hard to find any non ghost towns.
“Has the largest” meaning a 3 comment average per thread. That’s what the OC is talking about. The communities in Lemmy World are really small in a way that makes it hard to hold together a sub. A new movie comes out and maybe one or two people talk about it on Lemmy while Reddit has hundreds.
Then you might say, be the change you want to see, but Lemmy has a pretty small install base. Even if you participate, there isn’t anyone to follow, because the users here are usually white collar tech folk. Hence the interest groups being tech and politics.
My main (and it’s only minor) problem with Lemmy, and I guess Reddit is the same, is when people post the same story or link to like 4 separate communities, splitting the discussion. People interested in one of the communities are likely to be subscribed to the others anyway, so it clutters up the feed as well.
It’s quality comments though. I just went to old.red to see if it worked for me. It did, but the comments were very shallow. I’m guessing bots? It’s hard to say. After being here for years, it was a shock.
It’s two things. Bots, yes, but also the communities have gotten really lazy. Shit was fire during peak culture war because people were actively trying to learn. Now it’s like everyone gave up.
I loved reddit for the first year or so, we had some quiet communities for reddit that were everyone just messing around. It was fun and then it really wasn’t.
God, post-digg era was peak. When subs like r/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu were still active. It was just folks talking about their lives and relating to eachother. Then we all grew up, life got serious, and the culture wars started.
