Hey guys, Rule 8 of this community calls out that it is okay to repost from Reddit (this rule preexisted my tenure here), but it seems to be pissing a lot of you off (and I get it too). Since it’s in the rules right now I can’t remove the posts so I am going to leave this post up for a few days to find out if you guys want to change rule 8 to prohibit reposting from Reddit. Personally I hate Reddit, but at the end of the day this community belongs to all of us. Let me know what you want to do and we’ll go with the community consensus.
Fuck Reddit and Fuck Spez.
What’s wrong with draining reddit content and increasing lemmy user share?
Why would anny lemmyist be against that? It’s almost like some of people complaining are reddit plants.
As long as I can see the entire content of the post without having to go to any other website, I don’t particularly care where it came from.
I’d keep allowing it but remove the requirement to credit the OC if it’s from reddit.
Yes. Drain reddit content is good for lemmy. This gonna hurt pigboi a lot. Reddit started their mobile bullshit, now let’s hurt them back
Reposting content from Reddit is fine, but not a fan of direct links to Reddit posts. Screenshots seem fine though. Every social media site is endlessly sharing content from one to another, but links that take me away from Lemmy to Reddit are meh.
Meh. I disagree and agree.
First off: I really like the part of the fediverse: you will not get punished for external links. We are not a company that needs the people to stay - we are happy to link to external sources.
I agree because: I do not want people to just have a reddit mirror - that basically just sends reddit more users.
I disagree because: I think in our society the sources will be more and more important:
- where are the things from
- whats the context
If it is not OC it would be sad for people like me to not see where it was created - no matter if it’s reddit, instagram or x.
PS: did I say I hate those oligopols? Edit: format
Prefer a cache since the reddit content could be removed or blocked on a whim?
I don’t understand this. What does a cache do here? By who would reddit content be removed or blocked?
I am more leaning to IDGAF where the URL is going to. Being able to post non-OC is important IMO.
We all dislike reddit that is part of the reason why we are here, but being allowed to link basically whatever I want is a part of the freedom i like here.
Personally, if it’s organic, and by that I mean not automated, and someone went to Reddit, saw the post, and then reposted it Here, I don’t have any issue with that.
I don’t use Reddit, so any mildly infuriating post that gets posted from there to here is a post that I wouldn’t have seen otherwise.
As long as I’m not forced to go to Reddit to interact with it, which so far out of what I’ve seen in this community I haven’t had to because it’s usually the picture and the post description lemmy side as well so I have no big issue with it
Just because Reddit is a shit site, and I don’t like it, doesn’t mean that all content on the site isn’t worth anything, and if it’s something that’s cool or entertaining, and someone wants to bring it here, I’m all for it.
We shouldn’t send them traffic, but I have interest in good content from there. Repost without linking to Reddit.
Reposting a picture? No problem.
Reposting text from or just a link to a reddit post? That’s weird, don’t do that. But most of those posts are like discussions. So picture alone might not be enough
Unless that repost is from the original poster on Reddit than I think it’s annoying. Why should I comment on a post when the OP isn’t even here to participate?
That’s an excellent point. If the purpose of this community is discussion then reposts are harmful to that since for this community especially it’s going to be a lot of clarifying questions about a given picture, etc.
I dunno.
On one hand, fuck reddit.
On another, if a given poster is also mildly annoyed at the subject matter enough to repost, then isn’t it still their post here?
Or, on the third hand, if scrollers are popping in to talk, doesn’t it serve the same purpose as a legit original post?
I would, however, on the fourth hand like to see it explicitly stated that just linking to reddit ain’t cool. Because it ain’t. Copy paste the post so nobody has to go there to enjoy it here.
On the fifth hand, I suggest speaking to a geneticist because having five hands for a human is plain strange.
I firmly agree with everything you said there, and I want to add that if the main reasoning for wanting to remove the rule is “fuck Reddit” , then that means that this concept itself is a picture example of a mildly infuriating post.
And by that I mean, It’s mildly infuriating when someone just blanket decides that because they hate something, that everything about that thing is bad and nobody else should be able to see it. It’s almost never a black and white concept.
I don’t have a problem with a meme repost from time to time. But this is [email protected], people post things that annoy them and typically users engage with the post, ask questions, be angry together etc. If it is reddit repost we are engaging with the void. It is similar to reposting personal things such as AITA, relationship advice or whatever the fuck it is now called on Reddit.
all those subs are so AI/ or a writers own made ups stories. thats whyi stopped engaging on those subs originally prior coming to lemmy.
If it is reddit repost we are engaging with the void.
This is my biggest complaint witn it. I subbed to some of these communities when I first joined lemmy but quickly realized that there was no point in reading these discussions because I couldn’t participate on the reddit side and nobody was commenting on the lemmy side, so why even bother?
I don’t mind people moving content from Reddit to the threadiverse. I do mind posting titles that claim authorship of a post when you are reposting someone else’s content. I am mildly opposed to including links to the original reddit post when reposting from reddit, but I wouldn’t ask a mod to enforce that preference cuz you’ve got stuff to do. Just my two cents; it’s whatever the community wants and you’re willing to do.
or reposting and removing the date/timestamp to hide the obvious when it was post originally, as if to make it like a newly fresh post screenshotted from twitter.
I blocked the spammy git that kept doing that, I don’t feel they added anything of value to the community.
I vote no Reddit.

Wanna hurt pigboy - content drain is the way
