I’m a straight white dude from Europe (that’s not me in the profile, I’m just pretending), so I am probably as shielded from getting demonized as it gets. But I struggle to understand how people are so butthurt about letting everyone be whoever they want to be. What does it matter to them?

Probably, but I manage to be insecure and not a giant asshole. At least I hope so. So there has to be more to it than just that.
There is: fear. Persistent bullying from early childhood - likely from their own family - makes them become bullies themselves.
