As much as I hate US employers engaging in such practices, the article starts with “Federal agents raided four East Valley locations” and suddenly I’m not sure anymore that this is good news.

I live nowhere near Arizona, but I have some personal experience with something kind of similar. A local minority franchise owner had hired most of his cook staff from various South American countries all of them undocumented and basically none of them spoke any English. They were all cook staff and lived in a motel down by the river. He would buss them to work every morning and back every night.

When authorities got wind, it’s basically what he was charged with. Trafficking etc. The irony is that he wasn’t getting rich doing it. The guy himself worked his ass off every day. And the biggest crime is that his worker’s weren’t allowed to be here legally. They all got deported and I think he went “back home” as well. And the community was poorer for it.

I’m all for ending slavery and similar conditions. But that’s coming down from the top. Often these undocumented want to be here so bad they will go through things most Americans couldn’t imagine or appreciate. And they deserve better than they get for sure.
