All we have to do is not eat bats.
Come to think of it, there’s probably a long list of things we eat that we should cut back on or stop all together.

Yup. Who’s in charge of determining if he gets bailed out? How much money does each of them need to say yes?
Oh, they won’t take money? What influence does he need to buy?
For the amount of money he’s set to get, there’s noone that’ll turn down a nice gift of some sort.

love it

“Microsoft is walking back Windows 11’s AI overload — scaling down Copilot and rethinking Recall in a major shift” For Now.
Give them 6-8 months, they’ll shove it back in quietly in a way you can’t see it happening as easily.

When a distro is ‘dated’ and get’s ‘stale’ updates, it’s not like the browsers don’t get regular updates. They’re just dragging their feet on kernel revisions and DMs, testing more and moving more slowly, gaining stability. Latest Firefox is still on Debian.

Yeah, I guess I came off more negative than hopeful. Supposedly on of the big phone makers is partnering with someone doing pocket linux, and there’s Furi, Jolla and Volla. The real shining star is the EU rights causing (many/most/all?) phones there to be able to be unlocked and open to flashing. But open for the US is getting much more rare, and with oneplus’ recent hardware fuse breaking on flashing, I’m just feeling like (amongst many other things here) we’re losing the battle to privacy and open hardware.

I’m well versed, been in IT for decades, and my only substantial gripes about 11 (when it launched) were the removal of taskbar features and the capitalism issues with the store, ads, and telemetry. And I suppose the unreliability of the OS to update itself is just fucking embarrassing.
Now with the AI BS and their fuck you, you’ll get nothing and like it attitude, I’m now actively against them. Except for farming and selling your data and not being able to reliably update eating hours of users time, I don’t really care all that much. They’re trying to be secure, they could do a lot better.
Win 10 was serviceable, apps worked, developers tested against it, it wasn’t hard to look after a herd of them. Updates were still shit, but it’s been that way since 8.

Yup, and getting fewer every day.
There are some projects (postmarketOS and half a dozen people forking it for other distros) trying to get kernel and drivers worked out, Linux is still sadly lacking at a bunch of the best tricks Android and IOS use to save power (most notably freezing applications), we’ll get there eventually.
The Halium stuff +Ubuntu ports works if all you’re worried about is privacy and as you said have a supported phone.
Postmarket can’t make it through the morning on a charge. Halium is Android kernel and drivers and also has power issues if you decide to run android apps. Neither one can do anything with NFC.

I’ve driven an 8n ford, a john deere 40 and an international h1000 over the years, They don’t last forever and parts aren’t always available. And while they’re each powerful beasts compared to horse drawn equipment, you’re not going to adequately manage 300 acres with them these days. You need quite a bit of scale to compete these days.

LOL, probably.
I was Linux on the desktop at work for over a decade, changed jobs, they forced me to go Windows or Mac. Mac infuriated me with it’s half Linux half locked down BS, so I went windows, WSL came out and I was relatively pacified, kept Windows for a couple more years after I changed jobs again. Finally said WTF and tried Debian, bookworm just worked, steam, laptop, dual video cards, Got the hardest windows only software running in wine, worked around the mandatory no stuff. I ran it for 6 months, got bored. Looked at immutable. Watched someone on peertube doing a live sesh working on a mastodon or lemmy cluster in NixOS, fell down a rabbit hole.
Now, by default I have nothing installed I don’t need immediately, I have nix shells for yt-dlp, qemu, video editing, I need something it gets installed just for that shell and then it’s gone. Almost any package I could want is available. I clone my home directory and a couple config files, I can move my entire setup box to box. configs are stored in git.
But then, updates are scary. A lot of my packages are in the hands of people who didn’t create them. Probably 90% of the stuff I run is just a .deb file unpacked by someone who wants to run the app in Nix and decided to share the work. One of my core modules got stale after an update last week and it too me most of a night to figure out why it took me 10 minutes to boot.
It’s complicated enough I never feel like I understand it all. It breaks just often enough that I’m forced to learn more about it. It has a few super-powers that make me not want to swap it out with something else.

They part where you can actually make enough money to pay the taxes on your land. ;)

I really want an 8" Linux tablet with a processor from the 2020’s and reasonable battery life.
That and a cellular wifi AP and I’d ditch my phone.

John Deere support technician wrings his hands greedily.

But whatever you do, mark off late November through Early December and late May through early June, those are updates, and you only get limited time move to the next version before you start having compatibility issues with the previous release.
God I fucking love Nix tho.

Even if it wasn’t an LTS thing, ‘dated’ means nothing to Linux. Stability but with security fixes is the real win. There’s a hell of a lot of room in the Windows install-base for “needs an os that’s not spying on them, but realistically just uses a web browser.”

I would think that one of these European datacenters could manage to raise a control plane providing cheap load balancers and stand up some file/data clusters. It can’t be THAT hard to compete with amazon

I don’t hate it…
When do i get the jack in the back of my head, I want to get inserted like now…
ohh not The Matrix… damn
